New Ombudsman is Contested Already

The new national Ombudsman Guido van Woerkom got only 91 votes out of 144 parliamentarians present. He was the sole candidate presented out of 30 people who wanted the position. Various Dutch Moroccan organizations had opposed his candidacy because he said in 2010 that he didn’t want his wife to take a cab because it might have a Moroccan driver. At the time he had apologized for this. Normally, an ombudsman is selected by a wide commission of parliamentarians and has support from the whole parliament. Parliamentarian Harry van Bommel of the leftist Socialist Party said that 63% of the votes is too small a basis for an ombudsman.
