Dutch Parliament Inquires about Illegal Buildings of Dutch King in Greece

The Dutch Parliament wants clarification from the government about its involvement in the Greek holiday villa of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima. A group of locals in the village of Kranidi is angry that three ministers have given permissions which break laws. A civil movement speaks about environmentally unfriendly behavior by representatives of a foreign state who are guests in Greece. This story recalls the problems around an earlier holiday villa which the King and Queen bought in Mozambique in 2007.

One Hundred and Twenty Police Complaints against Labor Party Leaders

The Dutch prosecution has announced that 120 people have complained to the police about discriminatory remarks about Moroccans by Labor Party Chairman Hans Spekman and party leader Diederik Samsom. This is a reaction to the 5,000 complaints against PVV leader Geert Wilders who shouted with his followers in The Hague: “Less Moroccans.” Wilders said that Samsom said in Parliament that Moroccans have, “an ethnic monopoly” on hindrance. He has also related this to their religion. Spekman, according to Wilders, has said that Moroccans are “no good and should be humiliated in front of their community.” Wilders said that he prefers that no one be prosecuted, yet if he is prosecuted, these politicians who made more extreme statements than he, should be prosecuted as well.

Animal Party Criticizes Dutch Embassy Turtle

The Dutch Party for the Animals criticizes the turtle “Luis” of the Dutch Embassy in Brazil. The turtle forecasts the results of the

soccer games of the Dutch team in the World Championship for the embassy. Party leader Thieme demands that the turtle be freed. She said that if the Dutch play well, the embassy doesn’t need animals to forecast the results. A spokesman for the embassy replied that, “It is very good that Luis lives in the garden of the embassy for a year already. An employee bought him from an acquaintance, who otherwise would have made soup out of him. Luis now lives in a garden the size of five soccer fields.”

Parliamentarian: Scandalous Behavior of Turks during Demonstration

Christian Democrat Parliamentarian Pieter Omzigt said that various slogans shouted during a demonstration by Turks against a monument in Almelo memorializing the Turkish genocide of the Armenians were scandalous. He gave as an example the slogan “Karabach will become the mass grave of the Armenian.” It was shouted by a speaker and repeated by the public. Omzigt also said that members of a military band who wore Ottoman uniforms were a provocation in view of the fact that the genocide was carried out under the Ottoman rule. Omzigt together with four other parties, SGP, CU, SP and PVV have asked the government whether they know anything about Turkish government pressure on mosques, foundations and organizations to participate in the demonstration. These parliamentarians also want Foreign Minister Timmermans to discuss the demonstration with his Turkish colleague.

Dutch Asylum Policy Attracts Foreigners

Former Parliamentarian Hans Gualtherie van Weezel is departing chairman of the commission which supervises the return of asylum seekers. He said that while the Dutch law concerning immigrants originally was quite severe, now a machinery has developed of lawyers, interest groups and politicians which creates exceptions. The result is that asylum seekers increasingly choose The Netherlands as a country to go to. Together with Germany and Sweden, that is The Netherlands. He concluded that it has become almost a mission impossible to make foreigners leave The Netherlands.

New Ombudsman is Contested Already

The new national Ombudsman Guido van Woerkom got only 91 votes out of 144 parliamentarians present. He was the sole candidate presented out of 30 people who wanted the position. Various Dutch Moroccan organizations had opposed his candidacy because he said in 2010 that he didn’t want his wife to take a cab because it might have a Moroccan driver. At the time he had apologized for this. Normally, an ombudsman is selected by a wide commission of parliamentarians and has support from the whole parliament. Parliamentarian Harry van Bommel of the leftist Socialist Party said that 63% of the votes is too small a basis for an ombudsman.
